mars rocks

Edward Maunder, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, England, published a paper in 1894 that attempted to resolve the question of whether there were canals on Mars or not. In Maunder's view, the surface of Mars was distinguished by subtle shadings and delicate details.

What may look like a canal may be a chain of small "dots" instead.
