In 1909, E.M. Antoniadi, an astronomer at Meudon Observatory near Paris, turned a 33-inch telescope known as the "Grand Lunette" on Mars, and obtained some of the most remarkable views obtained during the prespacecraft era. His sketches and maps showed Mars as a desert of soft colors and its surface as a maze of streaks and spots. |
