Indiana RadioWatch: January 29, 2005
A small issue, as we haven't received many e-mails.
Northeast
Thanks to the IRW readers who caught the error that we printed - Summit
City Radio Group Director of Programming is Bill Stewart, not Bill Hunter.
Sad news to report, as Kovas Communications' President Frank Kovas has
passed away at the age of 81. For twenty years, he owned N-T/WGL (1250am,
Fort Wayne) and along the way, acquired five other stations. He sold four
of them (WGL, WCKZ-FM, then-WWWD-FM, and WXTW-FM) in 2001. In a separate
transaction, he also at one time owned (and later sold) WIFF-AM + FM in
Auburn. IRW has heard from several people today - all agree that Mr. Kovas
was one of northeast Indiana's most eclectic owners. His grand successes
came in an area where he still owned broadcast interests: Chicago. There,
he owned suburban stations WCGO (Chicago Heights), WKKD (Aurora), WMCW
(Harvard), and WONX (Evanston). He was also a pioneer in developing FM
Stereo. He's survived by his wife Connie, a son, stepson, stepdaughter,
sister, brother, and grandchildren. Kovas' funeral will be at 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Winchester Road Chapel, 6424 Winchester
Road in Fort Wayne, with visitation on Tuesday from 2pm - 4pm and 6pm - 8pm.
