Indiana RadioWatch: June 3, 2000
Northeast
After only a month as PD, Phil Grosch exits Alternative/WEJE (96.3fm, Churubusco). J.J. Fabini
gains additional responsibilities as PD (he'll stay on as Music Director, too). Buster Meyer,
morning show producer, will voice-track middays, since Matt Goshert is moving to nights. Michael
Dean, former night guy, takes Grosch's afternoon airshift.
Tim Gilbert, erstwhile GM of WPTA-TV (Channel 21, Fort Wayne [ABC]) heads to Lexington, Kentucky
where he'll be Director of Marketing at NBC affiliate WLEX-TV. Gilbert's replacement at WPTA
is Jerry Giesler. Giesler has worked at many stations including Granite's KNTV in San Jose,
California and WHO-TV in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mark Allen, afternoons at Country/WQHK (105.1fm, Decatur) earns Music Director duties.
Public Broadcasting of Northeast Indiana is given a CP for 91.3fm in Orland.
From just over the border: The FCC has approved a CP for the 93.9fm in Van Wert, Ohio. Dick
McBroom's Maumee Valley Broadcasting will broadcast 4400 watts from a location on U.S. 30 near
Middle Point, Ohio. Maumee Valley had owned WONW, WZOM and WNDH in northwest Ohio until last
year, when he sold them to Clear Channel.
Where are they now? Former WOWO (1190am, Fort Wayne) VP/GM Jane Bartsch is now VP/GM at Tribune
Radio in Denver, Colorado. She recently left Long Island where she was President & GM at 3 of
Barnstable Broadcasting's stations.
Northcentral
A Petition to Deny has been filed with the FCC over Pensacola Christian College's translator
application on 88.5fm in South Bend.
We just saw one of the first articles in a national publication that covers a DTV station in
Indiana. Interested? Broadcasting & Cable profiles WNDU-DT in its 22 May 2000 issue, Page 54.
Northwest
The FCC approved changes to WZRK-CP (101.7fm, Kentland), but we haven't seen the changes, since
the FCC databases aren't being updated while they change computer systems.
Central
Oldies/WGLD (104.5fm, Indianapolis) GM Charlie Morgan is now VP/Market Manger for all of
Susquehanna's Indianapolis properties: WFMS, WGRL, and WGLD.
Jazz/WYJZ (100.9fm, Lebanon) is now broadcasting from their new transmitter site near Brownsburg,
Indiana. WYJZ is abiding by an FCC requirement that directional stations operate at 50% power
pending approval for full-power operation.
Indiana Community Radio Corp. receives a CP for 88.1fm in Morristown. They'll be broadcasting
2700 watts at 190 feet, using the calls "WJCF-CP" ("Where Jesus Comes First"). They still
have applications pending in Wadesville, Morganfield, Kentucky, and Madisonville, Kentucky.
Westcentral
Country/WWBL (106.5fm, Washington) and AC/WZDM (92.1fm, Vincennes) both join The Weather
Channel Radio Network.
Southeast
Pensacola Christian College has filed an opposition to a Petition to Deny concerning their
translator application on 89.7fm in Oak Park (a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky)
The Educational Media Foundation receives a CP for 88.9fm in New Albany. Calls are to
be W205BT. The FCC denied the Petition to Deny to this application. W205BT will translate
KLOV (89.3fm, Winchester, Oregon)
Southcentral
Longtime AAA/WTTS (92.3fm, Bloomington) PD Rich Anton will depart on July 14. In addition to
being PD, Anton also does mornings at "Indiana's 92.3".
Southwest
New to mornings at Oldies/WJPS (93.5fm, Chandler) is Gary McIntyre. McIntyre arrives from
Jamestown, New York, where he was Operations Manager at Oldies/WKSN and Country/WHUG.
We saw that Randy Bell's Southern Wabash Communications has acquired WMSK(AM) & FM in
Morganfield, Kentucky. Here in Indiana, he owns Evansville station WSJD (100.5fm,
Princeton) along with partial ownerships in several other stations.
Otherness
We've been working on our website a great deal. We invite you to take a look at both an
introduction to what we'll eventually have up, along with a list of Indiana radio stations on
the web. You'll find it at:
http://www.well.com/~irw/archiveintro.html
Please e-mail us with comments (irw@well.com)
The Indiana Broadcasters Association will be conducting a one day sports workshop at the NCAA
Conference Center in Indianapolis on Friday July 14. If you're interested in attending, contact
either the Indiana Broadcasters Association or Len Clark (lc1@evansville.edu) Cost is $50.00
for professionals and $25.00 for student professionals. The conference includes professionals
from sports networks, universities, and radio stations throughout Indiana and the nation.
Finally, we seem to have lost a chunk of our audience when we moved e-mail addresses. If you
have a colleague that used to receive IRW but doesn't anymore, or a colleague who's never
received IRW, encourage them to e-mail us and we'll add them to the list. IRW wouldn't be a
great publication without your support and we do appreciate it.
That's it for this issue! See you in two weeks...
