Indiana RadioWatch: June 27, 1998
(This should have been published on Wednesday June 24, 1998, but due to an internal
mailing error, it wasn't. Stories have been added since then, and a new Indiana
RadioWatch will come out on 8 July. -- Blaine)
Three major stories start this issue off. Then we'll move to the regional news.
The licenses of WBOW(AM) and WZZQ(AM) & FM were recently revoked by the FCC.
Owner Michael Rice was convicted in 1994 of sexual assult. The FCC deemed the stations
had misrepresented Rice's involvement with the stations, finding that Rice was involved
with consulting, programming, and hiring, after his conviction. Rice's company
Contemporary Media also had all of its Missouri construction permits denied, as
well as his two broadcast station licenses in Missouri revoked. (KFMZ in Columbia and
KBMX in Eldon)
On June 15, Country/WIRE (100.9fm, Lebanon) split off from its simulcast of WWRE
(91.1fm, Lebanon) and changed format to Jazz. The calls will change to WYJZ.
WWRE, still in hot water with the FCC over alleged interference, remains with its
country gold format. The new WYJZ (Y-100.9) is running automated. It makes for
the second smooth jazz outlet to enter Indianapolis in as many months. WSYW-FM
recently moved their classical format to the (AM) side and started the JSN "Smooth
Jazz" format on the -FM.
Bob & Tom add their largest affiliate to date: WRCX in Chicago, Illinois, effective
June 29. Former morning man Mancow Muller moves to Emmis' Q-101 (WKQX).
Northeast

the Summit City from PD/mornings at WLAC in Nashville, Tennessee. With Macy's arrival,
the morning show takes a new direction, heading to a more interactive talk format.
Previously, it was more of a news/features show.
IRW welcomes Don Gore to AC/WAJI (95.1fm, Fort Wayne). He'll be producer of the
"Majic in the Morning" show. Also, morning side-kick Mark Evans departs for an
entertainment reporter job at local NBC affiliate WKJG (Channel 33).
Country/WQHK (105.1fm, Decatur) & Hot AC/WMEE (97.3fm, Fort Wayne) promotions director
Tony Malone departs for mornings at crosstown Modern AC/WYSR (94.1fm, Roanoke).
