WAZY-AM:
In the early 1980's, WAZY(AM) changed format from CHR
to Lite AC and acquired new call letters. Between 1980
and 1984, the format changed to country, and the calls
flipped to WFTE. 1984 brought
another change ...WAZY(AM) was sold to
The First
Assembly of God and changed calls to
WCFY. In April, 1998, the
calls changed back to WAZY and the format switched
from religious to news-talk. In October, 2000, the
station flipped to standards, using Westwood One's
satellite service and CNN Radio News hourly news
updates. In 2001, WAZY(AM) dropped Westwood One in
favor of Jones' Music of Your Life standards format.
WAZY(AM) changed calls to WLAS
in September 2002 and remained standards for a couple
weeks before it dropped the format altogether in favor
of a 24/7 simulcast of country sister station
WLFF.
WAZY-FM:
Signed on in March, 1965. In the early to mid-1970's,
WAZY-FM moved dial positions from 96.7fm to 96.5fm.
Also with that move came a power increase: from
3,000 watts to its present-day 50,000 watts. Following
in the footsteps of many CHRs across the country
in the early 90s, Z-96 dropped CHR in favor of
Hot AC, calling themselves simply "96 WAZY." WAZY
went to satellite Hot AC in 1998 (via Westwood One's
Bright AC format) as "96-5 WAZY". Briefly in the
fall of 2000, WAZY flipped to mainstream AC (through
Westwood One's Soft AC format). Finally on March
16, 2001, the station went back to CHR, bringing
the format back to Lafayette after an 8 year
hiatus. The station continued to be known as
"96-5 WAZY" until March 2004 when WAZY reimaged
to "Z 96-5." The CHR format continues to this day.
