Station History

WBNI's call letters just kept moving down the dial. Follow along, won't you?

WBNI-FM (89.1fm)

89.1fm signed on Thursday June 15, 1978 at 5pm. The 89.1fm frequency signed on in 1978 as WIPU.

WBNI-FM (91.3fm)

91.3fm signed on in 2002. In September 1998, WBNI announced they would be trying for an addition frequency to simulcast WBKE. The programming split occured on 2 February 2002, as WBOI (at 91.3fm) and translator W204BF (at 88.7fm) signed on. WBNI (then at 89.1fm) switched frequencies with WBOI (91.3fm) on 28 June 2004. Management decided that the WBNI calls meant "Classical" to listeners, so the WBNI call letters moved to 91.3fm and 89.1fm became WBOI.

WBNI-FM (94.1fm)

94.1fm signed on in 1992. With parent Public Broadcasting of Northeast Indiana, Inc.'s acquisition of 94.1fm for $1.75 million in early 2007, the WBNI calls moved from 91.3fm to 94.1fm on May 1, 2007 at 10:00AM.
