Station History

There are two very distinct incarnations of WXKE.

WXKE-FM (103.9fm)

103.9fm signed on May 6, 1976, as "Album 104." The former WXKE at 103.9fm was WYLT. WXKE was (and is now again) known as "Rock 104" and aired a Rock music format from its signon through October 1, 2002. WXKE returned as "Rock 104" at 9:41AM on August 7, 2006.

WXKE-FM (102.9fm)

WXKE was also at 102.9fm. The frequency signed on September 1, 1965, originally at 103.1fm, and licensed to nearby Roanoke. The WXKE calls on 102.9fm replaced WEXI. In February 2004, WXKE dropped its simulcast with sister WXTW and changed formats to Standards as "The River." WXKE was purchased, along with its sister stations by Summit City Radio Group in July 2004. The standards "River" format drifted over to sister 1250am WGL and WXKE relaunched as Classic Hits "Mike-FM." On August 31, 2006, the station abandoned its Classic Hits format and flipped formats to a simulcast of sister WGL. From August 29 through Midnight on August 31, the station played all Frank Sinatra songs. 102.9fm then flipped to standards, as a simulcast of WGL. Briefly using the call letters WWGL, it is now WGL-FM.
