1782: Switzerland stopped the execution of Witches.
1792: Poland executed the last person in Europe who had been tried and convicted
of Witchcraft.

The Magus is one of the primary sources for the study of ceremonial magic, and
for a long time was one of the rarest and most sought after of the 19th century
grimoires. Barretts' magnum opus embodies deep knowledge of Alchemy, Astrology,
and the Kabbalah, and has been cited by the Golden Dawn and other occult and
esoteric movements as source material. Written in 1801 in the middle of the
'Age of Reason', sandwiched between Newton and Darwin, this was possibly the
last epoch that a work like this could be composed.

1829 Rev. Robert Taylor: The Diegesis - made the case that the entire Gospel
story was already in existence long before the beginning of the Common Era and
was probably composed by the monks at Alexandria called "Therapeuts"
in Greek and "Essenes" in Egyptian, both names meaning "healers."
This theory has stemmed in part from the statement of early church father Eusebius,
who, in a rare moment of seeming honesty, "admitted . . . that the canonical
Christian gospels and epistles were the ancient writings of the Essenes or Therapeutae
reproduced in the name of Jesus." Taylor opined that "the travelling
Egyptian Therapeuts brought the whole story from India to their monasteries
in Egypt, where, some time after the commencement of the Roman monarchy, it
was transmuted in Christianity."

Extracts from The World Congress of Religions papers, Chicago, 1893: Oriental
scholars, who had begun their researches in the domain of Indian literature
at the beginning of this century, were put to great perplexity of thought at
the discovery of the existence of a religion called after Buddha in the Indian
philosophical books. Sir William Jones, H.H. Wilson and Mr. Colbrooke
were embarrassed in being unable to identify him. Dr. Marshman, in 1824,
said that Buddha was the Egyptian Apis, and Sir William Jones solved the problem
by saying that he was no other than the Scandinavian Woden. The barge
of the early orientals was drifting into the sand banks of Sanskrit literature,
when in June, 1837, the whole of the obscure history of Indian and Buddhism
was made clear by the deciphering of the rock-cut edicts of Asoka the Great
in Garnar, and Kapur-da-gini by that lamented archaeologist, James Pramsep,
by the translation of the Pali Ceylon history into English by Turner, and by
the discovery of Buddhist manuscripts in the temples of Nepal Ceylon and other
Buddhist countries. In 1844 the first rational scientific and comprehensive
account of the Buddhist religion was published by the eminent scholar, Eugene

Wilson - An encyclopedic account of the creation of the universe with the geneology
of the gods, along with a goodly portion of Krishna's life. In Sanskrit and
English. This is Joseph Campell teritory. A staff favorite and a real find.
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was started in 1848 (& continued painting
until 1900+) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais and William Holman
Hunt. Other artists working in the Pre-Raphaelite style in the 1850s included
Ford Madox Brown, Arthur Hughes, Henry Wallis, Robert Braithwaite Martineau
and William Windus. Later, Rossetti inspired a new, younger generation of artists:
Edward Coley Burne-Jones, William Morris, Simeon Solomon and Evelyn de Morgan.
Several illustrators, such as Henry Justice Ford (who illustrated the Andrew
Lang 'Fairy books') and Evelyn Paul were drawing in the Pre-Raphaelite style

Paving the way for all modern spiritual thought, The Varieties of Religious
Experience was revolutionary in its view of religious life as centered not within
the Church, but solely within the person. James was the first to define spirituality
as "the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men in their solitude."
It had influence on the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous and on launching the
American pastoral counseling movement, and a role in spawning the psychology
of religion.

Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) - mystical experience 1904 led to his founding
Thelema (Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law). The word Thelema
finds its origins in the Bible, but was first brought into common usage by Rabelais,
who wrote of the Abbey of Theleme, and had the motto "Do what you will."
This theme echoed St. Augustine's "Love and do what you will" and
was a part of the emerging philosophy of humanism. The Equinox (journal) was
published ca 1919. Volume III Number 6 was The Book of Thoth: The Egyptian Tarot.
Liber Aleph Vel CXI: The Book of Wisdom or Folly - Written in New York City
at the end of the First World War, this has been described by Crowley as "an
extended and elaborate commentary on The Book of the law, in the form of a letter
from the Master Therion to his magical son".

Doesn't say a whole lot about the Druids, but match this up with Ellis' "Celtic
Empire", "The Celts" and "The Druids"; Gregory's "Complete
Irish Mythology"; Guest's "The Mabinogion"; and Hutton's "Pagan
Religions of the Ancient British Isles", and you have an excellent all-round

Peter Kingsley, Ancient Philosophy, Mystery and Magic (1997) - the Pythagorian
tradition, with particular focus on Empedocles. Modern scholarship imposes an
artifical distinction between "rational" and "mystical"
elements in these thinkers. Suggests that for the presocratics, science and
religion were a unified whole which can be properly understood only when we
grant as much importance to the mythic or metaphoric mode of presocratic thought.
Major change in thought occurred with Plato and Aristotle, eliminating many
of the mythical aspects. Kingsley ties Pythagoreanism and Orphism to Plato,
and suggests a cultural whole that would have formed the background for Plato's
thought. Excellent scholarship, easy to read.

The Isle of Avalon Sacred Mysteries of Arthur and Glastonbury - Nicholas R.
Mann; Green Magic (August 1, 2001) - Nicholas Mann, who has a degree in ancient
history and anthropology, lived on the Isle of Avalon in 1983. He conducted
original fieldwork, led tours and wrote guidebooks to the area. He is the author
of ten books, including The Dark God (Llewellyn, 1996), The Silver Branch Cards
(Druidway, 2000), Druid Magic (Llewellyn, 2000).
The Christ Myth by Nicholas Carter (ppb 2001) (For most of the two hundred years
after the death of Christ, contemporary literature contained no reference to
him whatsoever. Then came the four gospels in the middle of the second century.
With the failure of the administration of the Roman Empire, there was widespread
distress. Partly under the influence of Eastern religions, there was a craving
for a saviour. Christ was thus imported into an ever-extending religious revival.
Assurance of an afterlife in heaven or hell. Somewhere in the chaos, around
the sixth or seventh centuries, the despair crystallized in a movement, which
became the Catholic Church. The founders sought authority. They borrowed phrases
from eastern religions, from Plato and from the Jewish Talmud. The average man
knew only of one mile around him, in the robber-baron age of 600 to 1400 AD.)
Magic Mushrooms - Clark Heinrich 2002 (Good on entheogens and Hinduism, but
not on Christianity and Alchemy. Read Acharya S., (Jordan Maxwell), Manly
P. Hall, Kersey Graves, (Ernest Busenbark), David Fideler, (G.A.
Wells). Christ "himself" as well as Moses is indeed the mushroom,
as John M. Allegro: The Dead Sea Scrolls : A Reappraisal 1956. For the Song
of Solomon is a mycology guide for Amanita Muscaria, but also for Stropharia
Cubensis. References of Jonah miss the ups and downs of the Amanita experience.
For the book of revelations misses the many references to Cubensis. Better than
Dan Merkur's weak explanations of everything in the Bible being ergot/entheogens.)
