At the bottom of the west slope below our house was a pond that provided
hours of birdwatching -- great blue and little blue herons, two kinds of
kingfishers, egrets and ducks abounded. One mother duck appeared one day
with seven ducklings. Over a week's time, their number dwindled to zero,
as nightime predators (snakes and owls) picked them off.

To the north of our house, a field where horses and cattle grazed, and
hawks, parrots, toucans and more took rest in the trees.
