Camping in Kings Canyon, August 2005

Northdome in Kings Canyon

My husband and I took our first camping trip this summer. Though both of us had been camping with our families when we were children, it was the first time either of us had experienced it as adults.

Kings Canyon is located in the Sierra mountains of California, nestled between Yosemite and Sequoia national parks. It was created by the same geological forces that carved Yosemite and offers many of the same spectacular features -- a U-shaped canyon cut by glaciers and enhanced by a major river running through it; granite cliffs soaring thousands of feet above the canyon floor; verdant meadows and an abundance of evergreens. What it lacks is the 3 million tourists annually who flock to Yellowstone. At half a million visitors a year, Kings Canyon is considered an undiscovered gem.
