Maui, January 2002

In January 2002, I took a brief trip to Maui to visit Cynthia, one of my oldest and dearest friends, and her husband, Jerry. After years of scrimping and saving, they finally built their custom dream home and this was my first visit to their new house.


The house sits in the center of a two-acre lot surrounded by a dense tangle of tropical rainforest. The property is on the slopes of Haleakala, a dormant volcano, just below Makawao.


Here you can see where the jungle's edge meets the cleared land.


The table on the 10-foot-wide wrap-around porch provides an idyllic place for breakfast, a sunset cocktail or an afternoon snooze.
