A very large trade paperback, this book is a celebration of Pocket's Star Trek novels. Taylor selected excerpts from a number of novels and presented them in number of thematically-organized chapters, offering a few lines of commentary on each. This is not like Pocket's episode guides for the TV series; not all novels are included. It's not intended as a reference source. However, one valuable reference guide is included at the end of the book: a timeline in which all of Pocket's Star Trek novels are placed in context with the episodes and movies.

When the android Data's head is opened, why are there lights inside? If the Enterprise's computer is artificially intelligent, why doesn't it make more decisions? The Computers of Star Trek could be better organized. It reads more like a collection of magazine articles than a book; there's not much flow, and no real introduction or afterword to lay out the book's goals, put things in context, or make a point. The authors don't seem to know Trek as well as they might, either. They refer to an episode called "The Quest" on p. 64, which is apparently a Next Generation episode. The index lists "The Quest" as a Deep Space Nine episode. I don't recall an episode by that title in either series, though Deep Space Nine did have one called "The Search."

This is the novelization of the movie Galaxy Quest, which parodies Star Trek and Trek fandom. A young adult novelization by Ellen Weiss was also published. Bisson, an award-winning SF writer, has done a number of novelizations and tie-ins, including YA Star Wars novels featuring Boba Fett, but no actual Star Trek books.

The Questarian website has cover scans for such apocryphal Galaxy Quest tie-in books as The Physics of Galaxy Quest, I Am Not Lazarus, Galaxy Quest Memories, and a few others that look suspiciously similar to certain Star Trek books.

There's some effort at providing a brief history of Star Trek fandom, but in general this is a rather Shatnercentric look at the phenomenon.

This is a "newly updated edition" of Haskett's The Unauthorized Starfleet Daily Meditation Manual: Going Boldly on Your Inner Voyage, published in 1996 with different cover art. Though the text refers to a second edition, it appears unlikely to have been sufficiently different from the first to be worth listing separately. Even this edition is not much different. There's new cover art, the title has been changed (the title and subtitle have switched places), there's a brief new introduction and a slightly changed index... but most of the daily entries are unchanged. Anyone who is flaky enough to have read the first one cover to cover will be disappointed by the relative scarcity of new entries in this volume. Anyone who prefers rationalism to spiritualism will find this either unreadable or unintentionally hilarious.

Way back in 1995, Random House published Net Trek, a guide to online resources about Star Trek (AOL, CompuServe, Internet, etc). Because of the speed of change online, the book was outdated almost as soon as it was published, though at least it was fairly well organized and laid out.

Now another publisher has ventured into similar territory. This book is not too badly organized, but it is ugly. Some pages have as many as four different type faces. The few illustrations are randomly selected screen captures, complete with Internet Explorer toolbars. And there are plenty of omissions. The newsgroup section doesn't list any of the startrek.com newsgroups, nor does it include the core rec.arts.startrek.* newsgroup, rec.arts.startrek.current. The annotations, where they exist, are extremely short, generally just a sentence or two.

And I'm not just peeved because it doesn't mention this site. Honestly.

If the book interests you, buy it now before all the info goes out of date. But if you've found your way to this site, you probably know your way around well enough that you don't really need it.

The blurb says it all. This is the only book about the music of Star Trek. If, like me, you collect the soundtracks, or if you're starting to get interested in the music of the series, this book is well worth reading. The discography includes short reviews of the various Trek soundtracks available, including those from the TV series.

Well, the blurb says it all, really. This is a postcard book in the same paperback format as the 1997 Next Generation postcard book. There are nine photos of Seven of Nine, seven of Janeway, three of Torres, two of Kes, and one group photo of Kes, Janeway, and Torres.

The first Star Trek postcard book was an original series book published in 1977. Despite Pocket's more recent efforts, the format does not seem to have caught on, as this is the third and last book of its type thus far.

Like its predecessor from 1979, Star Trek Speaks (by Susan Sackett, Fred Goldstein, and Stan Goldstein), this is a collection of quotes from Star Trek organized by subject, with an attribution to the character speaking and a little context when necessary. Not surprisingly, Sherwin's book is much longer, as it has much more to draw from. Researching this book may well have helped Sherwin prepare for her next projects, two trivia books.

This is a scholarly, academic work from a publisher that sells primarily to academic libraries, so there's no blurb to quote. I haven't yet read this book, so I can't say much about it. It's clearly more academic in tone than Marquita Byrd's book on Trek and race, Multicultural Communication and Popular Culture: Racial and Ethnic Images in Star Trek, and probably closer in intent to Daniel Bernardi's Star Trek and History: Race-ing Toward a White Future. This appears to be a critical look at Star Trek and its depiction of race in the context of changes in society over the last few decades. Skimming through the Epilogue, it appears that Pounds is not satisfied with The Next Generation's handling of race and ethnicity, but he retains hope for Deep Space Nine and Voyager. He may write again on this subject, this time discussing the two newer series in depth (they're only mentioned in passing in this book).

I haven't read this book yet, but as the contents and blurb suggest, it's a feminist academic critique of The Next Generation. An acquaintance with a bachelor's degree in Women's Studies found quite a few familiar names in the index and bibliography, which suggests that the book may be academically respectable. I don't know yet how well the author knows Star Trek, though.

I haven't read this book yet, but it looks interesting. The connections between religion and Star Trek are often more complex than some viewers and writers seem to think. Porter and McLaren have found three key perspectives and a number of papers to explore each.

Part of this cookbook is written as if really by Neelix, as he discusses some of the background of the recipes. Other parts go into the real world, behind the scenes stories of how food and drink is presented on Star Trek, as with a section on Quark's bar. I have not tried any of the recipes, but many of them look simple enough for anyone.

This is the second Star Trek cookbook, following Mary Ann Piccard's Official Star Trek Cooking Manual from 1978. It was almost the third. An unofficial Star Trek cookbook by Theresa Robberson was scheduled for publication by Citadel in 1997. However, the book was postponed and eventually cancelled after Viacom sued Citadel over a previous unauthorized book, The Joy of Trek.

This is not only a hardcover coffee table book with dozens of paintings by a wide range of artists, from Sonia Hillios to Dave McKean, it's also a very different work of fiction. Imagine an issue of a magazine like National Geographic set shortly after the end of the Dominion War, visiting a number of worlds to see how life is going on. The styles of art vary dramatically, from almost photorealistic works to abstract pieces. The stories are not much more than a series of vignettes. The second and thus far last Star Trek scriptbook offers a selection of Voyager episodes centering on Seven of Nine, including a few pages of color photos.

Pocket has published a number of Buffy the Vampire Slayer scriptbooks in essentially the same format. Given that the Buffy books continued well after the Star Trek books, it appears the Trek books didn't sell very well, and the experiment was ended. However, all the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine scripts were released on CD ROM by Simon & Schuster in 1999.

Like a couple of other Pocket nonfiction books from this year (Quotable Star Trek and the Star Trek Cookbook), this book is a new version of something done first twenty years earlier. And like those books it benefits from having a lot more Star Trek to cover. The Star Trek Sticker Book is in pretty much every way an improvement on the Star Trek - The Motion Picture Peel-Off Graphics Book. There's a much wider variety and greater number of stickers, and there's also several pages of explanatory text, putting the images in context in Star Trek and often discussing their real world creation as well.

Boldly chronicled as well, in both text and over 550 color photographs, are many of the collectibles available today -- from action figures and comics to phasers and Saurian Brandy bottles. The collectibles are group [sic] by series, allowing collector's [sic] of all ages to go directly to the Star Trek series they love the best -- be it the original Star Trek, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, or Voyager.

Brief synopses of each series, chronicling their plots and casts, are included as well. Prices are found throughout the book with the collectibles listings as useful tools for every collector.

This is a revised and expanded version of a book first published in 1996, although the revision and expansion seems to be the 27 pages added in the last two chapters. Fans who are interested in only one series may like Snyder's approach, but as a book collector I found it somewhat annoying to look through no fewer than ten places to find all the book listings (one section for each series plus one section for crossover material in the book's first 159 pages, which is evidently the original edition, and the same number of sections in the update section). Still, the book looks good, thanks to the large number of color photographs. There is also an introductory section that provides some historical context for the series and the collectibles.

A note about the title: on the front cover, it's A Trekker's Guide to Collectibles With Price Guide Unauthorized. The title page has the title as A Trekker's Guide to Collectibles With Values, and that information is repeated on the verso in the Library of Congress Cataloguing in Publication data. The latter is the official title.

Schiffer has also published Ursula Augustin's Star Trek Collectibles: Classic Series, Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager in 1997 and Kelly Hoffman's The Unauthorized Handbook and Price Guide to Star Trek Toys by Playmates in 2000.

This site doesn't cover foreign language Star Trek books for two reasons: first, most of them are translations of American books already listed; second, finding information and finding actual copies is difficult, and few of the fans using this site are likely to find information on such books useful. This is an exception. Though the text is Japanese, this trade paperback is profusely and colorfully illustrated. Starship fans who enjoy good shots of different ships from the TV series and movies will find a lot to look through in this book. There are shots from episodes as well as behind-the-scenes photos with close-up shots of various models. 

Getting a copy of this book is not necessarily difficult. My copy came from a store that has since sold out; it cost US$13.49, including shipping. However, that was an unusually good deal. Prices from other dealers on the Internet generally range from US$40 to US$60.

I haven't seen the first three volumes, but it's my understanding that they're episode guides and more text-oriented.

In the 1990s, Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie produced a number of audio versions of classic SF stories under the Alien Voices banner; this was their first Star Trek audio. Basically, it's a scripted, hourlong convention skit. It suffers from the same problem as a lot of comedy albums -- the sense that you really had to be there, because the audience is sometimes howling with laughter at something the person who can't see Nimoy or de Lancie has missed. As for the story, it's just there to get Spock and Q into some verbal sparring.

Included as a bonus disc with the special anniversary edition of the first movie soundtrack, this is an album narrated by Gene Roddenberry, featuring some special guests (William Shatner, Mark Lenard, DeForest Kelley, Isaac Asimov, and Nichelle Nichols). Shatner and Kelley just chat as themselves with Roddenberry, whereas Lenard plays Sarek, discussing his marriage with Amanda and Spock's birth. The original LP was released in 1976 with fewer tracks than this release.
