The way I heard it was that Gardner Dozois is alleged to have said, upon viewing Martha dangling from the end of the bungee cord, "My god! I see what they are using for bait! But what do you supposed they are fishing for?"

You know, that's not even the Gardner line I ever heard before.

What did you hear? I'd love to know!
Michael R. Walsh (mrw) Sat 9 Jan 99 23:57
Well, she was in the air at the time. I can't expect her to have heard much.
Martha Soukup (soukup) Sun 10 Jan 99 10:43
Well, I didn't hear anything directly, only in the line of people talking afterward, of course. Gardner's the kind of guy who has twelve lines for any occasion; he was supposed to have yelled "Don't do it, Martha, I'll buy the story!" before I plummeted.

'Course, I didn't have a story on his desk and when I next sent one he bounced it. Boingdy boingdy it's the story currently in _Starlight 2_.

I like "boingdy boingdy" as a song of triumph, and would preface all my most cutting remarks that way if I had ever bungee-jumped. Boingdy boingdy, pearls before swine. Boingdy boingdy, you're no John F. Kennedy. Boingdy boingdy, takes one to know one. What do you mean "we," white man? Boingdy boingdy.
Martha Soukup (soukup) Tue 19 Jan 99 12:53
Boingdy boingdy you betcha.

Best done, I believe, in the voice of Wakko Warner.

He's a character on Animaniacs. Sounds like George Harrison ca. "Help!"
