You might be thinking of Gov. Nelson Rockefeller. 

There were plenty of rumors...murder, suicide, etc., but he
died in San Francisco, far from his mistress, Nan Britton.

The big rumor was that he was poisoned, as I recall.

Nelson Rockefeller, on the other hand died happy, but not in Happy.
