KZSC Radio
University of California, Santa Cruz

Then and now:

KZSC has now finished it's latest upgrade, this time to 10,000 watts.
This first page, though, shows the move from 10 watts to 1250 watts and the original installation of the ROHN SSV tower.
The second page shows various views on the tower as of April, 2002.
The third page shows the first attempt at installing the extra 40 ft. section by helicopter on March 20, 2002.
The forth page shows the second successful try at installing the extra 40 ft. section by helicopter, May 18, 2002.
The fifth page shows the final installation of the new transmitter and new directional antenna

Some history:

KZSC went on the air in August, 1974. It was a 10 watt station at that time. I became involved on the first day, fixing the antenna system which was not operating correctly. In the years that followed, one thing led to another. By 1978, a power increase application was filed and granted. Further complications led to finding a site on campus that did not interfere with the Lick Observatory shop. I found a good site, above Crown College, back in the woods, away from everyone except the deer. Campus Facilities approve the location, because there was nothing else planned for that location.

The footer for the tower was poured in the fall of 1980. And the tower went up, in the rain, in November of 1980.

This is the view of the new building and also the crane placing the second 20 ft. section of the new tower in place. If you look closely, you can see me and my partner securing the bolts for the base of the top section. Note the tire tracks from the crane. The ground was soft from the heavy rains that week.

Here we are, tightening bolts at 20 ft.

Getting ready for the crane to lift the third section up.

Moving the third section into place. It was a lousy day to do tower work, since it was raining. But the crane was there, so up we went, and so did the tower.

The full 80 ft. tower, installed.
Next to go up was the KZSC antenna system.

The antenna, installed.
That's me, waving.

The KZSC transmitter. It's a CCA 3000D, 1972 vintage.
We bought it used from WYSO in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

State of the art 1980. A Continental 310Z-2 exciter, a Moseley TRC-15AW
remote control and an Optimod 8000A.
