Sightseeing in Costa Rica, La Marina Wildlife Rescue

Our guide at Cano Negro told us there was a wonderful wildlife rescue operation nearby a little town called La Marina. He said the facility rehabbed injured wild animals, then released them, and added that visitors to the facility were welcome. We decided we'd go check it out.

It was a mixed experience. The place was much more like a public zoo than a rehab facility. Many of the animals were caged in spaces far too small for their needs, and the lack of sanitation was disturbing. But there was also evidence of some rehab facilities (off-limits to visitors), and a caged three-legged gray fox obviously had been rescued from certain death in the wild.

I was charmed by this sign at the entrance to the facility.

This healthy-looking otter gnawed on what appeared to be snake meat for the better part of the day.

One of a collection of about a dozen agouti.
