The Women of Southern Songbirds
Martha Carson:
Martha Carson was born in the coal mining town of
Neon, Kentucky where she learned to play the guitar on a three
dollar mail order model from Sears. She and her sisters, Minnie and
Mattie, recorded for Columbia in 1936 as the Sunshine Sisters, and
later the Amber Sisters. In 1939, Martha and her husband, James
Carson joined the WSB barndance in Atlanta,Georgia, and became
wildly popular as the "barndance sweethearts". Martha Carson later
had many big gospel hits in the early 1950's which earned her
widespread exposure. Martha's gospel songs have been made famous by
artists from Elvis to Barbara Mandrell.
