Local Life

We were set up less than an hour's walk from a nearby town, so we had a fair amount of interaction with the locals, some of whom are captured here. They were very friendly, and understood that the crazy white folks in the camp brought money and useful knowledge into the community, to say nothing of our very amusing attempts at the local language.

These were fairly typical dwellings for the locals, as clichéd as they look.
The local market: capitalism in its uncut form. Those objects for sale in the background are plows.
Local kids on an oxcart, the most common method of transport.
A man working his rice paddy. Rice is a major staple of the Malagasy diet.
Part of the dance performance the local village put on for us.
Another part of the formal performance.
After the performance there was general freeform dancing.
Part of the audience at the dance.
