As part of a tribute to Barbara Stanwyck this month, Turner Classic Movies is showing several of her pre-code films tonight. It starts at 8 p.m. with the notorious 1933 "Baby Face."

I first saw "Baby Face" at the Roxie, a repertory theater in San Francisco which helped revive interest in pre-code films. Television, video and now DVD have helped kill off most rep houses. And the Roxie is threatened with evicition. Media coverage, the strong history (including Siskel & Ebert doing "If I Owned a Movie Theater" in 1985), and a benefit held Sunday may help keep it open. Another famous rep house, a Thalia in New York City (which is now the Leonard Nimoy Thalia), is opening again this week. While it is great that a wider audience can see "Baby Face" on tv tonight, it just isn't the same as experiencing it on a big screen with a sold out audience cheering, laughing, and hissing as Stanwyck sleeps her way to the top.
