The cover story in last week's Seattle Weekly was on Sleater-Kinney.

Update: Kill Rock Stars is streaming the new Sleater-Kinney album One Beat (which comes out August 20th) in QuickTime. Details, lyrics, tour info and sign-up for their excellent newsletter are on this page. There also is an MP3 of one of the songs.

Williamette Weekly has a cover story asking if they are Portland's best band ever (it mentions some members of the words and guitar email list which I'm on). Greil Marcus called them America's best rock band in Time magazine.

I wrote a preview of Ladyfest Bay Area.

The camera moves over the painting Bronzeville at Night by Archibald Motley during the opening credits of Devil in a Blue Dress. You can see the painting a little ways down this page. There is an oral history interview with Motley. Director Carl Franklin mentions this on the commentary track on the DVD.

First things first. Margaret Cho is incredibly funny. Laugh until it hurts funny, laugh until you cry funny. And this is actually captured in her two concert films, I'm the One That I Want and Notorius C.H.O. It is also true watching the former on DVD at home alone one afternoon and the latter that evening at the packed opening of the San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival.

Notorious C.H.O. which was shot in Seattle opened in LA last week and opens today in San Francisco and New York City today (a schedule lists other opening dates and you can sign up for her email list for details like her appearance at shows today in NYC). If it isn't opening near you soon, there is a two CD set recorded at her Carnegie Hall show. There is a ton of press including a glowing review in the New York Times and Amy Sohn's column on hanging out with Cho talking about orgasms.
